Rick Everingham – Featured Artist April 2023
Rick Everingham has spent the past 30 years living between two countries – Australia and Italy. We are so very excited to share with you new work celebrating his relationship with and experiences of Italy.
Rick has worked continuously as a painter since his first solo exhibition in 1970. He has held numerous exhibitions in Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, and gaining an ever increasing following along the way. International shows have been held in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and in Italy in Soiana and San Gimignano.
His first visit to Italy was in 1977 when touring Europe and its art galleries with his wife and two young sons. It wasn’t until 1991 that he returned to Italy for a painting trip, and he has been living between the two countries since.
Small Canal – Yellow House
“The small canals of Venice are enchanting places. There are so many of them, and each has its own particular characteristics. It is possible to catch glimpses of them from the Grand Canal as you pass. Some are filled with activity, and some at times are quiet and serene. They are always interesting to capture in paint.“

That 1991 painting trip brought about a major shift in focus and change in the subject matter of Rick’s work. His annual trips to Italy feuled his passion for finding different subjects, and he has produced a body of works that capture the very essence of these unique places.
Rick’s paintings are generally oil and acrylic on board or canvas. His work is concerned with the passage of time on the surfaces we experience in our lives. He is intrigued by the physical appearance of places while also expressing the subtleties of his own experience of being there.

Rick’s artistic expression extends beyond the painted two dimensional surface to three dimensional forms. He also creates unique bronze sculptures, using this very different medium to express different and playful ideas.
Rick shares with us “My sculptures are a departure from my paintings. I want to express some different and playful ideas in a completely different medium. They fall into two categories, my one winged angels, and some light comment of our human condition.”
Flight Over Tower, above, is the last remaining unsold piece from the “One Winged Angels” body of bronze sculptures. The tower alludes to the towers of Tuscany’s San Gimignano.
Bronzes from his “The Human Condition” series take a light hearted look at us … humans.
Trusting Two
“The climbing pieces with stairs came from a dream I had many years ago … The only way I could make it across was to step out boldly and trust that when I put my foot down, there would be something solid for me to stand on.”
