Pro Hart
Pro Hart was born Kevin Charles Hart in 1928 in Broken Hill, where he spent his early childhood on the familys sheep property near Menindee. He started to paint at the age of seven when he found illustrating his schoolwork was more fun then writing. After completing studies at Broken Hill Technical College, Pro worked in the mines. He used his painting as a creative outlet to keep him sane from the hours spent underground. In the 1950s, he started to paint seriously and developed a distinctive semi-primitive style. He is primarily self-taught and will use any tool or method to achieve the desired outcome for his work. He was discovered by Kym Bonython, an art entrepreneur, in 1960 and was launched with a major exhibition in Adelaide. After this success, Pro did not look back, He had numerous major exhibitions all over the world. He was a leading light in the Brushmen of the Bush art group, which was formed in Broken Hill in 1973. The other five members of the group were Jack Absalom, Eric Minchin, John Pickup, Hugh Schultz and Tom Offord. All six attained much popular success with their historical paintings and landscapes in and around the famous mining town of Broken Hill.Pro had his own Gallery in Broken Hill, including a three-story complex housing one of the most extensive private collections in Australia, featuring both Australian and European Masters. He was also a sculptor in metal and an inventor of different kinds of engines and machines. Pro collected vintage cars and motorbikes. He also owned a Rodgers Electric Pipe Organ, the largest of its kind in Australia, which he loved to play when he found a spare moment. In 1976, Pro Hart was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for outstanding services to art. He is represented in the National Collection, Canberra, the White House Collection, Washington, and Prince Phillips private collection as well as many other notable corporate and private collections.
